Jen Uy wondered how I managed to make the featured image of Punisher for my home page work and I was glad to help. Then I thought, why not make it a blog post so that everyone could see? It won’t be featured, but I hope it helps.
When you write a new post, you have to choose an option “Set feature image” in the down right corner of the New Post page.
Then you will get the choose image to upload interface, and once you upload the image, in the bottom of the editing page, you will have a link “use as feature image”. Once you click it, it will arrange it and turn to done, and voila! You have a featured image for that post.
I still haven’t figured out how to make a featured image that you haven’t uploaded, but use from another site, but it might not be yet available.
If you want to make that your featured post, then you have to go to Theme Options > Featured Category and change the Featured Category to match the post you just made.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

thanks for your swift reply. let me try it and will get back to you once it worked. cheers!
tried it and it’s working!!!
i actually saw that featured image tab already when i edited my ‘about me’ page but it doesn’t seem to work as well. anyway, my posts now have featured images….
many thanks!
Excellent, glad to have been of assistance.
Good info. I guess this would be the equivalent of Post Thumbnail > Set thumbnail for self-hosted WordPress installations?
I really couldn’t say – we had plans of installing Comicpress for a web comic at http://www.superamnesia.com but it didn’t pan out, so I never got a chance to play with a self-hosted installation.

Question: The featured image asset is awesome, yes. However, I’m doing a photoblog (or attempting), and I’m having some trouble. I would like to feature the image that is the post (so only one picture used as an insert into the post and for the featured image). Basically what I want to do is be able to pick one area of the image for the featured crop and/or zoom. That way something different, or at least something at all is expressed by the featured image, and that expression is at least consistent with the feel you get from seeing the whole image. An example of this problem? I have a picture of a guy on stilts, twirling a fire stick. The whole image is great, the lighting has a great feel. But the featured image?? Crops to his torso, so you can’t see any of the action of the photo. Is there a way to fix this, or control where or what the featured image crops or zooms to?? Or is this feature just not that specific yet? Thank you!!!
Rachel
Thank you for your comment, Rachel, and I will write another post concerning your question during the day. Again, I only see a long way around this problem because, as you said, I don’t think this feature is as specific as we want it to be.
You might have some luck if you suggest this topic to the WordPress.com developers, I guess more people complain about the long way more chance we have of them finding a faster way.
Post with explanations… hope it helps: http://r2cu.wordpress.com/2010/05/03/automatic-cropping-of-the-featured-image/

@Emir
Thanks for creating the article. I especially like the images for illustration.
I want to share my concern with you. The title you chose to use and on this post lacks the keywords “Structure theme” and “WordPress.com”. I’m concerned the title sounds like it applies to all WordPress themes, including WordPress.ORG original versions of the themes that have been adapted to run here on WordPress.COM. On top of that there are no acateogoies or tags assigned to the article which could clarify what it’s about ie. the WordPress.com version of the Structure theme.
In fact there are over 80 WordPpress.COM themes and most do NOT have this feature but your article reads as if they all do. Staff have made no statements to the effect that they intend to make all features consistently across all themes. I fully expect that the features which are unique to the individual themes will remain exactly as they are – unique to each theme.
I’m also bet ting that you did not you know that panaghiotisadam has reviewed this theme or else you would have backlinked to his article. [http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/introduction-to-structure]
I can offer you some help. You say you haven’t found a way to make a featured post but the answer to that is found in what Staff, Lance stated in the forum thread. You must designate a featured category . It’s the most recent post in the category of your choice that will be displayed. Best wishes for great blogging!
Thank you very much, I will make those changes (you’re 100% right about everything
) later in the afternoon CET.
Thanks again.
